Manchester City will soon begin talks with Rodri about an “improved contract”, according to GiveMeSport.
The website claims that the Premier League champions are hoping to ward off potential interest from Real Madrid.
It is believed that the Spanish giants are aiming to lure Rodri to the Bernabeu next summer, but City are keen to tie him down to a new deal before then.
The midfielder currently has just under three years remaining on the contract he signed in 2022 but GiveMeSport report that the club has been looking to open negotiations over an extension for several months.
Discussions were, however, delayed due to City concentrating on the transfer market but, now that the window has closed, talks are expected to start in earnest.
Real’s players have not been shy in their attempts to lure Rodri back to Spain
Speaking before the European Championship final last month, Dani Carvajal revealed that he has been trying to persuade the City midfielder into moving to Real Madrid:
“I tell [Rodri] every day to come to Madrid. I tell him: ‘Leave Manchester, there is no sun there, and come to Madrid, we need you. And what’s more, you’re from Madrid’… He says he has a contract, that there aren’t release clauses [in England]… He gives me the runaround basically, but he would be the perfect signing, no doubt. He is Spanish, from Madrid… He would fit in perfectly.”
City have coped without him at the start of the season
Although the Cityzens will be desperate to keep one of their key players, it’s fair to say that the team has managed ok in the absence so far this campaign.
Rodri picked up a hamstring injury in that final against England and he only returned to the substitutes bench last weekend versus West Ham. Guardiola’s team have won the Community Shield and their first three Premier League fixtures without him.
