In Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win over Freiburg, Thomas Müller came off the bench and scored a goal to cap off his 710th appearance for the club in all competitions. Among the many individuals who congratulated Thomas on this monumental achievement is none other than his former partner in crime Robert Lewandowski. Here is what he said (Bayern’s website via @iMiaSanMia):
Thomas was fascinating in many ways as an attacking partner. He’s the perfect multitasker. He speaks almost the entire game and gives commands. But that never distracted him from finding the optimal free space for himself. I have only seen that with him; he is fully committed to the team. And even though he talks so much, we still understood each other without words in the decisive moments; that’s another thing I really appreciated about Thomas: one look, one movement, and the other knows exactly what’s about to happen.

When I think about our relationship, two words come to mind: unique and honest. He’s the kind of teammate you could only wish for, who is also happy for his teammates from the bottom of his heart. I can still remember the incredible game when I scored five goals in nine minutes against Wolfsburg. When the game was over, I hadn’t even realized what had just happened. Then Thomas came to me and said: “You have just achieved something unique, people will still be talking about it in 20 years. Please enjoy it and let people celebrate you”, and then he pushed me towards the fans in the Südkurve.

Speaking of celebrations: He can also give it his all and set the tone. We celebrated one of his birthdays together in “H’ugo’s” and that evening was definitely one of my best “Müller moments”. I hope that Thomas’s intelligence and knowledge will become the foundation of his favourite club after his retirement. Because I’m certain: FC Bayern is the future of Thomas Müller – and Thomas Müller is the future of FC Bayern”.
