Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann made the decision to give Joshua Kimmich the armband for the German national team. This selection was made by the former Bayern, RB Leipzig, and TSG Hoffenheim manager ahead of this month’s international break for the pair of UEFA Nations League matches against Hungary and the Netherlands.
This was a nod that had long-since been anticipated for the German national team, and Kimmich is also touted to be a future captain of Bayern once Neuer decides to hang his playing boots up for good, at least with the Rekordmeister. For the keeper, he does have dreams of ending his playing career at Bayern, so when that time does come, as sad as it will be for Bayern fans, Kimmich is the natural successor to be captain of the club.
Reacting to the news of Kimmich being given the armband by Nagelsmann, West Ham United striker Niclas Füllkrug offered his full support for his former Bundesliga rival. He feels that Kimmich is a natural leader and a decent human off the pitch.
“Jo is a real captain. He leads the way. I’m always happy when he’s in my team in the final training session because the chance of winning is higher. I’m happy that since the Euros he’s finally been perceived in Germany for who he really is. He was often seen differently. But Jo is a very established player – and a really great person,” the striker explained to Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau in admiration of Nagelsmann’s decision to elect Kimmich as the new Germany captain (via @iMiaSanMia).
