Thirty women have been named to the shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or Féminin, an award recognizing the year’s most outstanding performer — including three FC Bayern Frauen stars and three players overall from Germany.
Striker Lea Schüller and defenders Giulia Gwinn and Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir are the Bayern Munich players who made the list. Chelsea FC defender/midfielder Sjoeke Nüsken rounds out the Germany contingent.
The full list is available from L’Équipe.
In addition to a Bundesliga-winning club campaign, the German players collected Bronze at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. If any of the four Bayern or Germany players win, it will be a first — for both club and country.
FC Barcelona can lay claim to the past three winners: Aitana Bonmatí in 2023 and Alexia Putellas in 2022 and 2021. The award was not given in 2020 — as Bayern Munich fans and Robert Lewandowski remember all too well — due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which truncated the French football season. Prior to that, the USWNT’s Megan Rapinoe won in 2019 while at Reign FC (now OL Reign) and Norway’s Ada Hegerberg won in 2018 with OL Lyon.
