Germany opened the Nations League group stage with a resounding 5-0 win over Hungary. West Ham forward Niclas Füllkrug opened the scoring in the 27th minute on an assist from Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala. In his first competitive start for the national team, Füllkrug registered two more shots on his limited 21 touches.
In his postgame interview (via @iMiaSanMia), Füllkrug said, “I think fans don’t realise how important the Nations League is for us. We’re playing against tough opponents. We took the euphoria of the Euros to this game, I’m proud of the team. We had many deep runs forward, Kai, Jamal, Flo, myself, it was tough for the opponent to read. We created so many chances.”
It’s refreshing to hear a player speak highly of the Nations League, especially a 31-year-old veteran like Füllkrug. Hopefully, Germany can carry the momentum into the Tuesday clash with the Netherlands.
