Werner set to start in Tottenham’s clash with Ferencvaros
Tottenham Hotspur take on Hungarian side Ferencvaros at the Groupama Arena in Budapest on Thursday, 3rd October, in a clash corresponding to matchday two of the UEFA Europa League.
Given their superb form in recent weeks, Spurs should be heavy favourites to win the match and take another step towards qualifying out of the league phase in the continental competition.
That’s not to say that Ange Postecoglou will not try and rest some key players, while some enforced inclusions in the starting eleven could also arise as a result of fitness problems.
With the likes of Richarlison, Son Heung-min and Wilson Odobert set to miss out, Give Me Sport has reported that a second straight start is on the cards for Timo Werner.
The forward, currently on loan from Leipzig, featured against Coventry City in the EFL Cup a couple of weeks ago and versus Manchester United as well but failed to produce the goods.
At Old Trafford, he was particularly wasteful and was among Spurs’ worse players in an otherwise convincing win over the Red Devils by a 3-0 margin in the Premier League.
The match against Ferencvaros will give him the opportunity to open his account in front of goal this season as Postecoglou is expected to continue showing faith in the German international.
If Spurs manage to overcome Ferencvaros, it is likely that a number of fringe players will continue to get chances over the league phase with Werner also likely to be a beneficiary in the near future.
How he performs in the continental cup will go a long way in determining whether or not Spurs trigger a buy option that came with his loan from Leipzig in 2025.

For the moment, however, Postecoglou is expected to count on him and the ball is now in Werner’s court as far as repaying the manager’s faith in him goes.
