There was a great deal of bemusement when Vincent Kompany made the decision to start Jamal Musiala from the bench in Bayern Munich’s 1-0 loss at Aston Villa in the Champions League. He eventually came on in the second half, but the trio of Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise, and Serge Gnabry started behind Harry Kane for the losing effort in Birmingham.
Shortly after the Rekordmeister’s first loss of the season, it came out that Musiala has been dealing with a slight hip problem, and that was the sole reason he was not risked from the start against Villa. In total, after he came on for Kingsley Coman to start the second half, Musiala clocked 45 minute plus stoppage time, which perhaps might have been more than Kompany wanted to push for his playmaker.
Per new information from Bild (via @iMiaSanMia), Musiala scheduled to not be involved this weekend against Eintracht Frankfurt and the subsequent international break with Germany is more of a precautionary measure than anything else. There is not a full muscle injury and he is very much expected to return to action for Bayern after the international break, when they are set to host VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga before a trip to take on Barcelona in the Champions League.
Sky Sport reporter Kerry Hau (via @iMiaSanMia) had also added that Bayern and the DFB were in close contact regarding the decision to give Musiala a bit of a rest. The discomfort he feels in his hip dates back to after the 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena and there was a mutual agreement to give him a rest until the international break is over. For both club and country, he is slated to miss matches against Frankfurt, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Netherlands.
Kompany will face a decision on who to start instead of Musiala for a tough test in Frankfurt, but he does have options and could very well field the same exact starting eleven that he put out against Villa.
