Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl admired his team’s dominance vs. Eintracht Frankfurt and went on an extended rant to defend the squad’s performance during the 3-3 draw.
“We don’t need to find many negative things today other than the three goals we conceded. Everything else in the game, the attacking, the intensity… when was the last time Bayern Munich ran six kilometers more in Frankfurt? When did Bayern play so dominantly in Frankfurt? Never – we lost 5-1 here last year, by the way. They were second in the Bundesliga before the game and we crushed them. The only thing that really pissed us off is the result,” Eberl said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
“The only argument you have as a questioner is the result. The way we’re playing, how dominant we are, that is remarkable. The only thing that should annoy us is that we’re not rewarding ourselves for it. We obviously play with risk. We play with dominance, we overwhelm the opponent. Then you have to defend these large spaces at the back. That’s difficult. We have to win these 50-50 balls, that has to be our ball.
“I already said that as an argument against Aston Villa: If the ball bounces off their feet, we have to defend it better. Because then at the back, it’s a 1v1 situation with this big space behind, that’s of course incredibly difficult for the defenders. And Marmoush is, of course, in outstanding form at the moment
“You can’t crush everyone up front and then have a man advantage at the back. We have to win the second ball. The opponent must not be able to play the ball. If the ball bounces off someone and you get into this ‘pinball tackling’ situation, you have to eat him up – even if it’s a foul. We have to stop it better.”
A fair question to ask — especially after three games of roughly the same tactics — is if Bayern Munich’s opponents feel comfortable absorbing all of the possession from the Bavarians because they know they only need a brief window to take advantage of Bayern Munich’s backline to score?
Possession is great…wins are better.
Has Vincent Kompany been exposed? Why has Harry Kane stopped scoring? Does Manuel Neuer need a replacement? If you’re asking those questions, we discuss all that and more in the newest edition of our podcast! Listen to it below or on Spotify.
