The Champions League has now been rebranded, introducing more games and with further competitions spawning left, right, and center, the topic of players being able to play that many games has come into question. Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany is aware of the implications of playing too many games and has revisited a stance that he had as a player.
“That has always been a topic in recent years, I was part of the FIFPRO players’ union,” Kompany recalled (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “We’ve always dealt with the topic very seriously. It’s not just about the games, but also about the travel – including with the national team. That’s about 75, 80 games. Even as a player, I demanded that a maximum number of games needs to be set for the players, that it should be limited. That protects their health and the interests of the clubs. And ultimately the coaches too, for whom it’s not easy either. That would make a lot of sense.”
Players like Rodri (Manchester City), Jules Kounde (FC Barcelona), and Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid) mentioned a possible strike if this issue has not been resolved; those players play in a bigger league size-wise which means they play more games.
