A Liverpool fan demanding an apology from talkSPORT’s Jason Cundy after his club’s stellar start to the season was met with disappointment on The Sports Bar.
What’s more, Cundy was quick to put the Red firmly in his place.
Liverpool continued their fantastic start to the season under new manager Arne Slot as they pulled off a 1-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
It means they not only maintain their unbeaten record in the European competition, but also become the first Liverpool side ever to win their first six away games in a new campaign.
The Reds have delighted fans so far, with supporters naturally having been nervy at the start of the post-Jurgen Klopp era – but Slot has put any fears of a post-Klopp slump firmly to bed with the team top of the Premier League table.
On the Sports Bar, talkSPORT hosts Cundy and Jamie O’Hara invited callers to reflect upon another night of huge Champions League action.
But Reds fan Luke did not just want to reflect on his side’s victory when he called into the show.
In fact, he had something very specific to ask of Cundy.
“I just want to say Liverpool are absolutely cooking this season,” he began. “And Mr. Cundy, you owe me an apology, buddy.”
The former Chelsea defender could hardly believe what he was hearing.
“Owe you a what?” he said incredulously.
“You owe me an apology,” repeated Luke.
“We had a little conversation a few months back and you said I had no clue what I was talking about, saying Liverpool were going to do this well.”
But the talkSPORT host was having absolutely none of it – and instead levelled his own question at the fan.
“What you won?” he asked curtly.
Luke conceded: “Nothing, yet, but…”
“Alright, well, what am I apologising for then?” interrupted Cundy, signalling that he would not be saying any kind of sorry until Liverpool gained far more success.
He also added: “I don’t remember saying it.”
“Well, it’s a great start,” reasoned Luke. “You said I didn’t know how well he was going to do because it’s a new manager.”
“No, he didn’t. It’s fair,” said Cundy, reflecting on the uncertainty ahead of the Slot era.
“It’s not fair because we’re eight games in, 21 points,” Luke argued back. “Sitting pretty rosy at the top of the league.”
But Cundy explained that his initial point still stood, with so much of the season still ahead of Liverpool.
“I mean, I think what I said was still true, though,” he said. “You don’t know what he’s going to do.”
Luke again hit back, saying: “Well, I think we’re top of the Champions League as well, aren’t we?”
“No. No, you’re not,” replied Cundy with a smile.
It was at this point that co-host O’Hara stepped in, explaining that while Liverpool had been impressive in the Champions League, they were not technically top of the table, given Aston Villa’s superior goal difference.
“Aston Villa are,” he explained. “You’re joint top.”
But the caller had clearly infuriated Cundy, who ranted as to why fans getting ahead of themselves in that way really bothered him.
“See, Liverpool’s starting to annoy me,” he said. “It’s like people like him.
“Eight games in, giving it all the biggen’ and beating their chest like Tarzan. They’ve won nothing yet!”
