Bayern Munich loanees Armindo Sieb and Gabriel Vidović are seeking to establish themselves at Mainz 05 this season and are in the tough spot of having to face their parent club in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday.
“The fact that we are playing directly against the club that loaned us out is of course a cool thing and very special for Armindo and me,” Vidović tolf FCBayern.com. “We are very strong away from home, and I hope that we can show that more often at home soon. I want to develop further in Mainz and help the team with good actions, goals and assists.”
Sieb concurred.
“It will be a huge challenge. Everyone wants to play against Bayern. I think a win is incredibly difficult, but possible. Of course I want to score – even if it’s the club that loaned me out,” Sieb noted. “We will develop a good match plan and build on the coach’s strategy. We need to have confidence in ourselves. The Pokal always writes special stories anyway.
“Bayern obviously has a large squad with exceptional players, that won’t bother them. We’re not used to English weeks, but the Friday game means we can prepare for Wednesday with even more focus and concentration.”
Sieb recalled making his professional debut under Hansi Flick in the DFB-Pokal against 1. FC Düren, but it was a bittersweet memory as Sieb was also hurt in the match.
“That day was one of the best experiences I’ve had in football so far,” Sieb said. “It was an incredible feeling to play for FC Bayern’s first team. You don’t know how things would have turned out if I hadn’t been injured. But I’m happy with how it turned out and I feel very comfortable in Mainz now. It’s an honor to play for this club in the top league.”
