Speaking on his “Two Robbies Podcast,” ESPN pundit Robbie Mustoe has shone a very positive light on Chelsea and everything that’s going on at the club right now after a strong start to the campaign from the Blues.
He couldn’t really have been more complimentary about the progress this season under new manager Enzo Maresca, and the big picture at Stamford Bridge:
“I feel like this is the most exciting project in the Premier League right now, given it’s not really been done before, this amount of young talents coming in. Yeah, and Maresca is getting his words across brilliantly,” Mustoe said of Chelsea’s new head coach.
“My goodness, you think about Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, the Sporting Directors, to continue to buy young talents. And the biggest part is the manager, and saying to the owners, ‘we don’t think Pochettino is the right guy, we think Maresca is the right guy.’ Big call.”
Directors earn Mustoe credit for decisive action and admitting their error
There is no denying that was a big call – a huge one in fact, because it was an admission of a failure in their part. They went to great lengths to pick Pochettino, and then had to be the ones to explain why he had been a bad choice.
It was a gamble, because if things hadn’t worked out with Maresca their errors would have been compounding. They could easily have carried on with Pochettino and hoped that things improved regardless to paper over the cracks of any long term philosophical divide.
But they had the courage of their convictions that things could get better, faster if they got rid of him, and so far that gamble is paying off.
