Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany perused his team’s upcoming schedule and knew that having to play so many games during a condensed time period would be a problem.
Once his team jumped out to an early leading during its 4-0 win over Mainz 05 in the DFB-Pokal, Kompany decided it was time to rest a few key players — including Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane, who both hit the bench after halftime.
“We have three games in six days. For me the worst thing now would be to lose a player to an injury. When you want to compete for trophies, you have to have fit players,” said Kompany (via @iMiaSanMia).
The extra rest might not seem like it means much, but a lot of wear-and-tear is accumulated during the season. For Kane and Musiala, a little more time on the bench was likely welcomed.
