Tottenham academy kid George Abbott is thriving on loan at Notts County
Tottenham Hotspur have a plethora of highly regarded young players in their ranks, and the responsibility is on Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou to ensure that all of the starlets take strides in their games during the campaign.
Several academy products were allowed to leave the Hotspur Way on loan to gain invaluable experience in men’s football. Some of them joined lower-tier English clubs while a few were farmed out on loan to Belgium. One of the players getting some regular minutes for his loan side is George Abbott.
George Abbott, who led Tottenham to the Premier League 2 title last season, joined League Two side Notts County on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day. He has played a key role in Notts County’s solid start to the League Two season, assisting once in 13 league games. The defensive midfielder has started 11 of his 13 league games as Stuart Maynard’s side lie fifth in the table.
The teenager, who has drawn comparisons with Manchester City star Jack Grealish, is taking chances with both hands that are coming his way. John Wenham—the owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose—is delighted with the progress Abbott has been making on loan at Meadow Lane. He expects Spurs to loan the midfielder out to the Championship next season.
“It is brilliant to see how well Abbott is doing,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He kind of goes under the radar because he is surrounded by players who get all the goals and assists. However, he is a really reliable player and I’m pleased he is doing well in Nottingham.
“He seems to start every game and always tends to play the full 90 minutes. Therefore, for Abbott, it is just about continuing to impress. If he does that, I imagine he will be lined up for a Championship loan next season.”
Abbott has made considerable progress at Notts County, playing a very important position in Stuart Maynard’s side. He has adapted to the demands of League Two football quite seamlessly, helping Notts push for promotion.

The Islington-born talent is making giant strides in his development, something that will immensely Postecoglou and the chiefs at the Hotspur Way. This reinforces the decision to send Abbott to Notts was the right one, and if he carries on performing in the same vein, it would not be beyond the realms of possibility that the North London club decides to loan him out to a Championship outfit next season.
At 19, Abbott still has a lot to learn and perhaps a move to the Championship on loan for a year would hugely aid his development.
