Bayern Munich’s struggle to get a foothold in the first half of the 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund frustrated fans and left the team with a deficit at the break. The performance improved after the break, however, with the Bavarians eventually getting the goal to reward their performance. Still, it was only enough to draw the game. Afterwards, Joshua Kimmich admitted his own frustrations with the first half performance:
“Both teams will go home somewhat happy with that point today. In my opinion, we weren’t good in the first half,” Kimmich duly noted, via Bayern’s official website. “We didn’t show enough intensity against the ball. In possession, we weren’t precise enough. We were better in the second half. Dortmund had one more great counter-attacking chance with [Marcel] Sabitzer, but we could have scored the equalizer beforehand. In the end, we even had a great chance to win this game. Following the equalizer, Dortmund had little left to offer.”
Unfortunately, what Bayern had to offer was not enough to win the game. The team’s next chance to rectify this mistake will come in another big clash, this time against Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal. And the team must be aware that such a frustrating, sloppy first half performance will not be enough against last season’s champions.
