Reports that West Ham have identified Sergio Conceição as a replacement for Julen Lopetegui are being driven by Hammers Director of Football Tim Steidten.
The Hammers’ Director of Football has always distanced himself from the appointment of Lopetegui, who was widely regarded as David Sullivan’s choice. Media sources close to Steidten have even claimed the German warned Sullivan against appointing the former Wolves boss.
Now, it seems history is repeating itself, with Steidten reportedly targeting former Porto manager Conceição—a move that contrasts with the club favourite, Edin Terzic. Terzic is believed to have agreed in principle to take the West Ham job if Lopetegui is sacked.
Of course, everything hinges on the Hammers’ next two matches (doesn’t it always?), which are against relegation battlers Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
In a strange coincidence, Conceição came close to joining our next opponents Leicester City following their title triumph but his club at the time-Nantes-refused to let him leave. The Portuguese coach has won three league titles at Porto.
