TEB VERDICT
This was a hard fought away win, and only the second three points of the season against a fellow struggling side.
It was probably too early to call such a fixture a six pointer, but it was most definitely a game not to lose and give the opposition any impetus.
A single goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta was enough to secure all three points which was match by a professional defensive performance from a back line that is growing and gelling with each game they play together as a unit.
This victory really did show how important the last point gained from Newcastle at the week really was, as the Eagles make it only one loss in six games heading into the home game against Manchester City.
Notable performances from Mateta, Ebere Eze, Marc Guehi and Max Lacroix in particular.
POST GAME QUOTES
OLIVER GLASNER
“Very pleased with the result. It was not about performing brilliantly. We expected a big fight and it was a big fight.
It was an amazing goal, an amazing finish by JP. We had two or three chances to take the game away from them and didn’t take them. At the end we had to be a bit lucky but I think we deserved to win.
When JP gets the ball in the box he is such a good finisher and it is usually a goal. We’re pleased with our defensive performance, we didn’t allow them a chance from open play, just one from a set piece in the first half and one in the second half.”
KIERAN MCKENNA
“Some similarities to the weekend. Nothing in the first half, it was a cagey game. Both teams cancelling each other out and defending well. We started the second half well, looked like we were going to grow into the game, we knew we had some good impact off the bench. Then we’ve given away a poor goal from our point of view. That really decides the game.”
