Never a dull DFB-Pokal night, is there?
Bayern Munich vs. Bayer Leverkusen was not a showcase for quality but it did have lots of drama. A double booking followed by a Manuel Neuer straight red card, his first ever, inside of twenty minutes. Staff on both benches getting yellows. Shots off the post — and a goal out of nowhere.
Vincent Kompany and Bayern got a look at how their youngsters and veterans alike respond to duress. As for Leverkusen, and red-hot coaching prospect Xabi Alonso…they probably needed this result. It has been a tough season. Might some questions start to be asked now, of where that dominating team from a year ago has gone? You would be forgiven for not realizing Bayern had ever gone a man down.
