Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has been under massive pressure of late given the Lilywhites underwhelming start to the 2024/25 campaign. The Australian has been at the forefront of massive criticism owing to Spurs performances that have left them far beyond their season’s objectives.
Tottenham are placed in the second half (precisely 11th) in the Premier League table at the moment with a record of more losses than wins, and that is very far from their aims to qualify for Champions League football at the end of the campaign.
Spurs latest loss against Chelsea last weekend in the London Derby at White Hart Lane drew massive criticisms from pundits and supporters, with a section of fans calling for Ange’s head given the Lilywhites inconsistencies this season.
Andros Townsend comes in support of Ange Postecoglou
Despite ample criticisms coming the former Celtic manager’s way, former Spurs winger Andros Townsend has come in support of Ange Postecoglou, insisting that the club should stick with the Australian at the helm. Speaking on the BBC Five Live Monday Night Club, Townsend said:
“Everyone knows Ange’s philosophy. When Pep lost a match or when Klopp lost a match, nobody was saying ‘why don’t you change?’ Why don’t you play five at the back? Why don’t you play ugly?
He was brought in to bring that attacking football back to Tottenham, what they were renowned for 15/20 years ago and they’ve lost their way a bit. I don’t think they’re far off – you don’t watch that game on Sunday and think ‘Chelsea outclassed us, they were miles better than us.’
For the first 15 minutes Spurs were electric. Chelsea couldn’t play out, Tottenham scored two early goals, and then they’ve allowed them in the game. They got one or two injuries, and it just didn’t go their way. I honestly believe they’re on the right track. They should stick with Ange and see where he can take them this season.”
While the calls for change have been growing louder and louder since the Lilywhites defeat against Chelsea, Spurs (and Daniel Levy in that sense) must make a decision on whether they are going to stick to their initial long-term vision under Postecoglou or if the immediate pressures are to get to the chiefs at Hotspur Way.
Townsend understands the potential benefits of patience (as we have seen with multiple sides over the past few years) as he supports the club to take note of the ongoing struggles on the pitch as part of a larger rebuilding process.
