A fact about Jamal Musiala that isn’t known by many is that he was born into a multiracial family: British Nigerian dad, German Polish mum, moving to England from Germany. That seems like a hectic childhood. Football wasn’t the reason for the Musiala family going back to Germany. Rather, it was politics.
“I was going through all those old pictures the other day, and it was an amazing reminder of how far we came from. We spent eight years in England before we came back to Germany. When I was 16, I was just finishing up my GCSEs, and there was a lot of uncertainty in our family. Not about football, but about life” Musiala recounted (via Players’ Tribune). “Brexit was about to take effect in the U.K., and my mum was worried about how it could affect her career as an expat working in London. We couldn’t really get clear answers. It was stressful. Right around that time, Bayern Munich offered us the chance to move back home. Or I should say our ‘first home.’ I loved England. I felt part English, if I’m honest. It’s never an easy decision to uproot your life like that, but it really felt like fate. Something about Bayern just felt natural.”
Bayern promptly picked up a young lad from Chelsea FC’s reserves, and the transition shouldn’t be that difficult. Well, Musiala definitely won’t forget something back in England and it has “London club heritage” written all over it.
To be continued.
