Tim Sherwood believes Ange Postecoglou has been hung out to dry by Tottenham Hotspur’s hierarchy
The 2024/25 season has seen Tottenham Hotspur fans split as results on the pitch continue to go from bad to worse.
For a growing number of fans, the problem lies with chairman Daniel Levy. ENIC and Daniel Levy have faced intense criticism over the years, particularly in recent weeks for not backing the head coach sufficiently in the transfer market, thus, leaving Spurs ill-equipped to compete with the best teams in the division.
However, there are some supporters who feel Ange Postecoglou is not the right man to steer the club back to where it belongs, suggesting his tactics, decision-making and in-game management have not been good enough. A change, they feel, is more than required to avoid the Lilywhites from getting embroiled in a relegation dogfight.

However, Premier League Productions (PLP) pundit Tim Sherwood feels Spurs’ struggles come from the top which is not often discussed in the media. The former Tottenham coach has blamed the transfer decisions that are being made at White Hart Lane, citing the recruitment department should be held responsible for making some poor signings that have led to substandard performances on the pitch.
“The glaring problem for me is the recruitment, and it has been for many, many years,” Tim Sherwood told Optus Sport.
“It’s not the shortage of money that’s being spent, it’s where the money is being spent… [Spurs] had the third highest net spend in the summer, all the time they spend money, you can’t continue spending money, it’s what you’re buying.
“It’s not about what you’re spending, it’s what you spend it on. It’s not good enough, the recruitment is so bad! I think it’s an easy recruitment job to work with Ange Postecoglou, because you know exactly how he wants his team to play, now give him some help.”
Tottenham appointed Johan Lange as their new technical director on November 1. Under his guidance, the club have made smart signings. The likes of Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last year, and the trio have proved to be astute acquisitions.
We are yet to see more of Wilson Odobert before making a judgement as he has spent the majority chunks of the first half of the season on the sidelines. Timo Werner’s signing on loan has proven to be disastrous and Lange has to take the blame for sanctioning the deal, while the jury is still out on defender Radu Dragusin.
Overall, Lange’s success rate in terms of recruitment since swapping Aston Villa for Spurs is high. However, it is high time he speeds up the recruitment drive now with less than a week left for the January transfer window to slam shut.
