Bayern Munich and Mathys Tel have been doing a dance for weeks about his status with the club. When rumors arose of the young Frenchman wanting to go on loan, they were quickly squashed by rumors of a long discussion between Tel and head coach Vincent Kompany to define the attacker’s role.
However, after three consecutive games planted to the bench, Tel might be feeling that he needs to move per Fabrizio Romano:
EXCLUSIVE: Mathys Tel has just decided to leave Bayern in January!
Bayern and player side will assess all the options on the market.
Chelsea asked for Tel at the beginning of January but there are more clubs also keen… race open. pic.twitter.com/jWkkIcn0K1

It is not clear from Romano’s report or any of the subsequent reporting below on whether or not Tel wants a permanent move or a loan, but it is clear that the wheels are turning for some clubs — including Chelsea FC and Olympique Marseille per Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau:

Chelsea FC will now intensify its efforts to sign Mathys Tel. In addition, many other clubs, including Olympique Marseille, have expressed a clear interest in the 19-year-old. Christopher Nkunku remains an option for FC Bayern as a replacement for Tel. Nkunku would still like to move to Munich. But Chelsea is also in contact with Manchester United because of Nkunku. @SkySportDE @Plettigoal
Finally, this news sets up Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Manchester United for a bit of a bizarre love triangle. Bayern Munich and Manchester United want Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku, while Chelsea and United want Tel per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg:
