Son Heung-min tipped to leave Tottenham at the end of the season and join a newly-promoted club from the Championship
Amid Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles this season, the club decided to trigger a one-year extension in Son Heung-min’s contract in January, keeping him at White Hart Lane until 2026.
Before the extension was triggered, the South Korean star had just six months remaining on his contract, allowing him the option to negotiate a move to abroad clubs. Moving on from a modern-day club legend like Son Heung-min is no easy task. Beyond his immense quality, having spent nearly a decade at Tottenham, he and the club have become inseparable.
But one cannot ignore the fact that the 32-year-old’s performance levels have massively dipped this season. The Tottenham captain’s powers have been diminishing since last year and it has reportedly left question marks over his long-term future and whether he will remain one of the first names on the team sheet if he remains at the club beyond this season. This has left many fans questioning whether it is time for the club to part ways with him at the end of the campaign.
Son has attracted criticism for his highly inconsistent displays and dropped by our gaffer in recent Premier League matches. The versatile forward has come off the bench in each of the last three Premier League games, and interestingly Tottenham have not won one of them. This may be due to Postecoglou protecting Son and keep him healthy for the Europa League.
Once the season comes to an end, it could prove to be curtains for Son as the Hotspur Way chiefs are reportedly planning to offload him. The South Asian is undoubtedly a legend at N17 and his contributions to the Spurs sides in recent memory cannot be understated.
Thus, a move away from White Hart Lane could make sense for all parties involved when the transfer window reopens in June. This is the view of former Brentford boss Martin Allen. He feels that work will be starting now behind the scenes to leave Tottenham in the summer with a newly promoted side deemed a potential destination.
“He’s been a fantastic player for them over the years. In all honesty, it looks like the pace he once had is on the way out, it’s nowhere near where it once was,” Martin Allen exclusively told Tottenham News.
“It’s going to be difficult to get him a place in the team where he’s going to play games and score goals.
“It wouldn’t be a surprise to me if Spurs start to work out how they can move him on.
“Where would he go? One of the clubs coming up from the Championship would take him like a shot because he has still got something in him.”

Tottenham secured Son’s future until 2026, but if he thinks of ending his decade-long stay at the club this summer, he will want to walk out with some dignity and the Europa League trophy. The versatile forward’s form has not been good and that needs to improve if Spurs are to go all the way in Europe.
While many debate whether Son should stay at Tottenham or move on to newer pastures, only Spurs fans truly understand the immense contributions he has made to the club. We would love to see the South Korean forward leave with a trophy in hand, cementing his legacy at Spurs.
