Tottenham Hotspur eyeing summer deal for Jonathan Burkardt
Tottenham Hotspur are having a season to forget under Ange Postecoglou. The club is in the bottom half of the Premier League table and fans are running out of patience for the way the club is run. Spurs are looking to end the season on a high amidst calls of sacking Ange and the change in hierarchy.
The Lilywhites are out of all domestic competitions and are almost out of touching distance from the Champions League qualifying spots. Faced with a number of injuries to key players, the North London club are said to be in the market already and strengthen the squad depth for next season.
Ange Postecoglou is hoping to stay in the job after reports emerged that the ex-Celtic manager’s future is hanging by a thread. After a 2-0 loss against Fulham last weekend, the Lilywhites recorded their 15th league loss of the season. They have lost more games than they have won and a strong summer transfer is needed again if they want any chance of going for silverware next season.
Tottenham Hotspur to sign Jonathan Burkardt?
Tottenham Hotspur are the second-highest scorers in the Premier League. But their league position does not suggest that they have been scoring a lot of goals. The attack has been massively depleted through injuries as the season has gone on. Last summer’s statement signing Dominic Solanke has missed several games this season and has failed to be a consistent starter for Ange Postecoglou.
Now according to TBR Football, Spurs are in the market to sign Jonathan Burkardt from FSV Mainz 05 in the summer. The 24-year-old is enjoying a stellar campaign with the German team and has been leading the line brilliantly this season. As per Sofascore, the prolific striker has scored 16 goals for Mainz this season in all competitions in just 23 games. The German talisman has led Mainz to third place in the Bundesliga as well.

However, Tottenham face competition for the 24-year-old’s signature. Many clubs have noticed how impactful Burkardt has been this season in the Bundesliga, and are in the race to sign the striker in the summer. According to TBR Football, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Manchester United are also looking to sign the striker and Spurs will have to compete with them if they want to make a statement signing again.
Is Spurs a good fit for the German striker?
Jonathan Burkardt is already making history at Mainz this season. As per OptaFranz, the 24-year-old became the first Mainz player in 11 years to score the most league goals (15 goals) for the club in a single season. This is quite an astonishing feat and it has helped the German club climb up to 3rd in the league table and into the Champions League qualifying spots.
The German striker needs to improve his overall game a little if he ends up at Tottenham. The striker is very efficient in front of goal, but his inability to create chances and drop deep to receive the ball and dribble past defenders makes him a questionable signing. Ange Postecoglou prefers his strikers to start an attack and create chances for other teammates, which is something Burkardt will find tough to do unless there is a significant improvement.
The Mainz striker likes to be a threat in the box and does not intend to get involved in the buildup phase. However, Burkardt is a proper goal threat and does not need a handful of chances to score a goal.
