According to Thursday’s BBC.com article, Evan Ferguson has been ‘pincered’ – whatever that means – with his experiences this year at Brighton, West Ham and Ireland – if such a thing as a three -way pincer were possible.
The young striker has certainly had a tough career plateau following his injury issues. At first West Ham and now Ireland he has become second choice, missing out on a starting place and often playing just a few minutes as a substitute which, at just 20, must be intensely frustrating for the young man who should be coming into his prime.
In his article “What’s happened with Ferguson“, BBC’s Senior Reporter Simon Stone suggests :
“It feels to me as though he has been pincered slightly…His lack of game time at Brighton means he can’t have been fully match sharp when he signed. Then, Graham Potter landed on the three at the back as a way of making his team more solid and less easy to play through in midfield”
Which sums up many opinions that Potter has been nursing Ferguson back to health, despite claims that it is selection policy, not fitness, that is to blame for his lack of game time.
Stone continues:”That has limited Ferguson’s chances, which compound the lack of match sharpness. It feels as though the Republic of Ireland international needs a break. There is definitely a top talent there”.
I just wonder whether Ferguson is going to catch a break at all in the nine games that remain in his loan spell.
With Niclas Fullkrug returning to full fitness it does seem another very West Ham pointless deal – to bring an unfit player in on loan, nurse him back to health and then send him back to his parent club for them to sell him at a price West Ham cannot afford. Classic.
