After much deliberation, we’ve come up with our best performing MUFC XI for the 2022/23 season.
The doors on Manchester United’s 2022/23 season has slammed shut. Erik ten Hag had an excellent first campaign in charge, with obvious progression made by the boys in red.
This has to be just the start for Ten Hag and this coaching staff, who now have a clear plan in place in order to take this side right back to the very top.
Before planning for a hectic summer transfer window, there’s little time for reflection. After all, if you can’t look back on the situation with pride, what’s the point?
Credit to the squad, who have fought for the cause this year (the first time in a while!). They deserve the plaudits they’re getting right now.
Anyway, let’s get down to the best line-up that we’ve drawn up. Some positions were pretty obvious, whereas a few were certainly up for debate. Take a look at the XI first, then we’ll give you our rundown.

David de Gea is the obvious choice in between the sticks. Yes, he’s far from perfect, but he’s still done a decent job. This could well be his last term as the undisputed number one, but he’s been a wonderful servant for United.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka did run Diogo Dalot close in the right-back position. However, the contributions of the Portugal international early on in the campaign outweighed Wan-Bissaka’s excellence in the second half of the season. Both have been good. Both deserve their places in the squad next term.
Centre-half was certainly intriguing. Lisandro Martinez was nothing short of brilliant, until injury cruelly struck and ended his season early. Raphael Varane was the go-to partner for the Argentine, with the Frenchman looking calm and composed throughout. We also have to give a shout out to Victor Lindelof who ended the campaign in a rich vein of form.
At left-back, Luke Shaw has been sublime for large stretches of the season. The Englishman is arguably the best in the country in his position. Tyrell Malacia’s addition to the fold certainly helped.
Casemiro has been United’s standout midfielder since September. The Brazilian finally added some stability in that area of the pitch. I’d argue for the first time in about a half-decade. Christian Eriksen has been involved in some big moments since his free transfer to the Theatre of Dreams, while we no longer need to talk about Bruno Fernandes’ greatness. He’s insane. Special mentions must go to Fred and Marcel Sabitzer. Both have filled in nicely at times.
The front three has proven to be United’s achilles heel from time to time. Marcus Rashford has been the main man for goals, while Antony has been given an unfair rep. The Brazilian has been superb. Alejandro Garnacho has only played limited minutes, but the overall threat he possesses outweighs the Reds’ other options in that area of the field. Wout Weghorst, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial have all done decent jobs from time to time, without really showing that genuine consistency.
