Man United are ready to step up their pursuit of Mason Mount, by making an offer this month.
Manchester United had a positive overall season, despite the fact that it ended in FA Cup final disappointment.
Now, attention is fully focused on the summer transfer window ahead. Erik ten Hag needs backing, in order to close the gap on Manchester City atop the table.
Several names have been linked. None stronger than Mason Mount at this moment in time. The Englishman’s Chelsea future remains up in the air.
The latest in the story came from The Telegraph yesterday. They claim that United are ‘to make’ a £50m offer to sign the 24-year-old this month.
United are ‘progressing’ with a deal to sign Mount, with personal terms not an issue for the Englishman.
The Red Devils believe £50m is a ‘fair price’ for the England international, who has one year left on his deal, following a pretty average campaign at Stamford Bridge.
Despite that, Chelsea are expected to ask for ‘substantially more’ than what United are expected to bid, with Chelsea also having a need to reduce their squad and create some wage space for their incoming manager, Mauricio Pochettino.
Liverpool and Arsenal are also keen on Mount, though there is a ‘growing confidence’ he will sign for United, with Ten Hag ‘earmarking’ him for that number eight position in his side.
There can be no doubt that Mount is a direct upgrade on Christian Eriksen, whose deficiencies were on full display during the FA Cup final over the weekend.
It does look like this will be the first summer signing made by the Old Trafford club – and what an astute piece of business it could be, assuming the two sides can agree a fee.
