Man United have eyes on Bayern Munich midfielder, Leon Goretzka.
Erik ten Hag is not hiding the fact that among his transfer wishes this summer is a new central midfielder. The links to Mason Mount have dominated the headlines over the last week or so.
However, Manchester United are doing their due diligence, looking further afield for potential options. The latest claim comes from Florian Plettenberg, who believes Man United have one eye on Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka.
The journalist states that United are ‘monitoring’ the ‘situation’ of the 28-year-old midfielder. Apparently, the German is aware of his uncertain future in Bavaria, due to Bayern Munich’s potential move to sign Declan Rice.
It’s stated that as things stand, there are no ‘concrete’ talks taking place, though Goretzka is remaining calm. In an ideal world, he’d prefer to stay at Bayern this summer, rather than moving elsewhere. He also has the support of the Bayern CEO.
All this suggests to me is that a deal doesn’t feel particularly likely to happen. If Goretzka wants to stay and Bayern would prefer to keep him, this feels like a non-starter.
Much like the Frenkie de Jong situation, United could become in danger of wasting too much time on a transfer target that’s unobtainable. I’d like to think the Old Trafford club have learned from their past mistakes – particularly with a deal for the aforementioned Mount looking far more likely.
For now, I’d take these rumours with a pinch of salt. I understand why United are interested in a player of Goretzka’s skill and quality. I just don’t believe a move is possible at this point in time, though things can change very quickly in football.
