Man United are set for Lisandro Martinez contract talks over the summer.
Manchester United came on leaps and bounds during the 2022/23 season under Erik ten Hag. Credit where it’s due, the gaffer has worked absolute wonders on every level.
His signings have all played their part. It felt like money well spent for the first summer in years. Perhaps the best addition, in terms of overall quality and longevity, is Lisandro Martinez.
The Argentine’s absence through injury during the end of the season was evident. United was nowhere near as good without him when playing out from the back.
United is seemingly keen on rewarding Martinez, by giving him improved terms.
It’s the Daily Mail with the claim, who state that United are ‘expected’ to open talks with the 25-year-old over a new contract during pre-season tour in July.
Martinez is currently recovering from a broken metatarsal, though he is expected to be fit for United’s tour of the United States.
United, pending new owners, are looking to lay its foundations for the future, with new deals for their top performers, in order to protect their assets.
Martinez, after a slow start, emerged as a key cog in this United line-up. His leadership, aggressive style of defending and partnership with Raphael Varane was all excellent.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Licha as much as the next United fan. However, giving him a new deal after just one year feels strange. I get that he’s played superbly, but this just feels a little premature.
Martinez is not going anywhere, anytime soon. Now let’s say he has another brilliant season in 2023/24, then it becomes worth a discussion. For now, though, I can’t help but feel this is somewhat pointless from the club’s perspective.
