Victor Lindelof is set to be offered a new contract by Man United, following his emergence at the end of the campaign.
Manchester United’s defence has undoubtedly been the club’s weakness over the last few seasons. The lack of any consistency in that area of the field led to a total loss of confidence in some players.
Erik ten Hag’s arrival seemed to wipe the slate clean for some, including Victor Lindelof. The Swede had to wait patiently for his chance, though he proved his worth with some brilliant performances from March onwards.
Now, according to The Sun, United are set to offer a new contract to the star, who enjoyed an ‘excellent end’ to the campaign.
In the absence of Lisandro Martinez, Lindelof was nothing short of superb. He was dominant in the air, won his tackles, played out from the back nicely and wasn’t afraid to carry the football. He actually ended the Premier League season with the highest pass completion rate in the division.
I genuinely thought Lindelof would be out of the door this summer, though credit where it’s due. He has proven his worth and it just goes to show that when he has the right player sitting alongside him, the ‘Ice Man’ is more than good enough.
Lindelof’s contract has another couple of years to run, though Ten Hag seemingly wants to send a real message of faith to the ex-Benfica man by giving him a new deal now.
This news also further fuels speculation that Harry Maguire could be out of the exit door this summer, with the Englishman looking like the fifth-choice centre-half under Ten Hag right now.
Let’s hope this new deal is done sooner rather than later, allowing Lindelof to focus solely on his football.
