Man United are looking to make a play to sign Everton goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford…
Manchester United Football Club need a new goalkeeper of some sort. The thought among supporters is that David de Gea is no longer a top-level player due to his glaring weaknesses.
If the Spaniard is to stay (which is looking likely), Erik ten Hag has to bring in some serious competition for De Gea. After all, there’s no room for sentiment in football, despite how brilliant the keeper has been for us over the years.
Well, the latest rumour is a little underwhelming to me. It comes from talkSPORT and they say that Man United are weighing up a move to sign Everton’s Jordan Pickford.
According to the report, United are ‘ready to move’ for the 29-year-old shot-stopper, regardless of what happens with De Gea’s future.
Ten Hag wants a ‘high calibre’ keeper who can either rival or replace De Gea during the upcoming season, with Pickford viewed as the man capable of doing that.
TalkSport understands that Pickford is ‘top’ of United’s list, while recently relegated Everton could sell for about £30m.
Everton need money as they look to rebuild while Sean Dyche could look to replace the Englishman, who’d fetch a decent transfer fee.
Understandably, the keeper would ‘jump at the chance’ to join United, which would present an opportunity for Pickford to play Champions League football.
Honestly, I’d be underwhelmed. Pickford is average at best. Despite his ball-playing capabilities, I’m not even sure he’s an upgrade on De Gea. I’d much prefer to see United spend the extra £10m and go and get Brentford’s David Raya, who is a far better all-round goalkeeper.
