Man United are stepping up their interest in FC Porto goalkeeper, Diogo Costa.
If you watched the Champions League final, you’ll have seen just how desperate Manchester United are for a goalkeeper who can play out from the back.
The Red Devils have enjoyed David de Gea for a decade now, though the game has moved on in that time.
Modern day keepers have to be able to play out from the back. Struggling in that area, along with the inability to come and claim crosses, suddenly makes De Gea expendable.
Among fans, there is no doubt that FC Porto’s Diogo Costa is the dream signing.
Well, Portuguese media outlet A Bola have provided some positive news on that front.
They state that United interest in the 23-year-old has ‘intensified’ in recent hours, though the Reds are now trying to lower the asking price to sign the Portugal international.
Porto want £64m (€75m) to let Costa leave, after some impressive performances for both club and country recently.
It’s believed United boss Ten Hag is ‘fascinated’ with the performances from Costa, especially in the Champions League.
There comes a time when United just have to bite the bullet and sign a world-class modern-day goalkeeper. Costa is the perfect profile for the way Ten Hag likes to play. It can be argued this is a bigger need than a high-level striker.
Honestly, none of this Jordan Pickford stuff. Go out there and get someone who can play in between the sticks for the next decade. Costa feels like the ideal target.
Yes, he comes with a premium, but sell Dean Henderson to generate some funds to supplement the deal and suddenly, it’s not looking too bad – particularly if Costa can transform the way United play out from the back.
