Ollie Watkins could be a potential transfer option for Man United this summer.
We’ve said it countless times already, but the big need for Manchester United this summer is a new striker. The Old Trafford club are crying out for that forward who guarantees goals.
Harry Kane was the number one target, though it’s looking increasingly likely that he’ll remain with Tottenham Hotspur, at least for another season.
Erik ten Hag will begin to look elsewhere. Rasmus Hojlund and Victor Osimhen have both been linked strongly. While over the weekend, a new name was thrown into the mix; Ollie Watkins.
The England striker had an impressive campaign for Aston Villa, scoring goals galore, powering his side to European football for the 2023/24 campaign.
It’s The Athletic who claim United are keen. A subscription is required, so we won’t go too deep into the story for obvious reasons.
According to their story on United’s transfer search, the 27-year-old Premier League striker is being ‘watched’ by United after Watkins has proven himself in the English top flight.
His progress is being watched by the club, though the forward is currently in talks with Aston Villa over a new deal, which could complicate things.
So this wouldn’t be the marquee signing that most United fans would be craving for in the striker position. I can imagine many would be underwhelmed with this addition.
However, at the right price, this could be an astute piece of business. Watkins doesn’t just score goals. He picks up assists, holds the ball up brilliantly and in general, his all-round game is excellent.
This would be a decent signing for a year, assuming United can’t find the right man, with the view to possibly going out and bringing in that elite striker next summer. At which point, Watkins would still be given plenty of minutes, though he wouldn’t be relied upon as the main man.
