Man United have always been in the race to sign Diogo Costa, despite some problems with any potential deal.
Manchester United Football Club have some serious issues to iron out in terms of their goalkeeper.
First and foremost, it’s about fixing David de Gea’s future. Stay or go, the Red Devils need to finalise their decision before moving onto potential targets.
Among those heavily linked with filling the void left by De Gea should he go, is Diogo Costa. The FC Porto man had a good season domestically, with Europe’s big clubs starting to take note.
The man from Portugal has a release clause which stands at around £64m (€75m), which is obviously pretty expensive.
Record (Tuesday print edition), via Sport Witness, have provided an update on Costa’s future. They say that United were ‘always candidates’ to sign the goalkeeper.
The decision has been delayed due to De Gea’s future remaining up in the air. If the Spaniard is to stay, they’ve set themselves a ‘limit’ of £30m on Costa.
If De Gea is departing, you’d expect United’s goalkeeper budget to be raised somewhat significantly.
Record add that Chelsea are also interested in the Portuguese shot-stopper, which could ‘shake up’ the race to sign the young man. Ten Hag’s side were said to be ‘stagnant’ in the chase up until this point. That could now change.
At this stage, a clean break from De Gea feels like the best move. United need someone who can play with the ball at feet, while also having a real command of the penalty area. Costa ticks both those boxes and it can be argued a move like this is more important than signing a top tier striker.
