Man United had been plotting a Zidane Iqbal exit this summer for quite some time.
Changes are afoot at Manchester United, though one impending departure that left us all scratching our heads is Zidane Iqbal’s. According to the latest, he’s all set to join FC Utrecht on a four-year, permanent deal.
The midfield man was absolutely the highlight of pre-season 2022; which is why we’re all scratching our heads at the prospect of him leaving permanently.
The Manchester Evening News have provided the lowdown on Iqbal’s future and this shock departure; that isn’t really much of a shock to those within the club.
Apparently, the departure of the United starlet was ‘planned’ from the ‘early stages of last season’, with his exit set to be confirmed this week.
At the time, all that was left to work out was whether it would be a loan or a permanent deal. We now know Iqbal is leaving for good.
United wanted to make the most of Zidane while he was at the club, though it is now felt the £850k fee is a fair reflection of his current talent level.
What I’m most disappointed with is the fact that Iqbal never had a chance at the first-team level in a game of significance. Friendly minutes are all well and good, but it’s about working out whether these guys can play when the lights are at their brightest. Zidane was never afforded that luxury, which is a bitter pill to swallow.
The good news is that United does have a sell-on clause in his contract so if Zidane does well over in Holland, United could benefit financially. That doesn’t take away from the fact that we never really got to see what he can do…
