Now, Sky Sports News have provided the latest. Their story is actually about a fresh Mason Mount bid being in the offing, though we’ve already discussed those claims from other sources.
What interests us here is their small snippet on Rice. Apparently, United ‘retain an interest’ in signing the 24-year-old West Ham United man. On top of that, internal discussions have already taken place about how the Reds could fund that move.
Due to FFP rules, it’s unlikely that United will spend a large chunk of their budget on one player, especially due to the fact that other areas need working on.
United could look to bolster their budget by player sales. The likes of Dean Henderson, Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire could all be sold for decent money.
However, all reports indicate Rice is going to cost the better part of £100m. There’s absolutely no doubting his talent and ability. I just wonder whether it’d be wise to spend such an astronomical fee on a midfielder – when a goalkeeper and striker are undoubtedly bigger needs.
I also believe Arsenal are still ahead in the race to sign Race, with the Gunners offering the midfielder the possibility to remain in London.
