Man United could look to make Alejandro Garnacho their new number 7.
Manchester United Football Club have some iconic jersey numbers. The nine, ten and seven stand out as the most memorable. Perhaps none more so than the latter.
From George Best, to David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. Some of the greatest have been bestowed with the honour of wearing the famous number 7 at Old Trafford.
Recently, anyone given that jersey number has struggled. Memphis Depay didn’t live up to the hype. Neither did Angel di Maria. However, talk about the next number 7 wearer is certainly intriguing…
It’s the Manchester Evening News with the claim. They state that United are now ‘considering’ handing the number 7 jersey to talented 18-year-old starlet, Alejandro Garnacho.
Currently wearing the 49, Garnacho enjoyed an outstanding debut season for the Red Devils, starting over 10 games while making many more impactful appearances off the substitutes bench.
The talent is so obviously there. Garnacho has immense ability. If this honour is given to Garnacho, he’d become the first teenager to don the number 7 since Cristiano Ronaldo – which in itself would come with high expectations.
I do wonder whether this would be a bit too much too soon. Garnacho has enjoyed a whirlwind twelve months in football. I’m not sure heaping even more pressure on the young Argentine makes sense at this point in time.
Why not give it another year or so before giving him this jersey? There’s no rush. United can leave it free for a season if they choose Garnacho as the next wearer of this number. They do not necessarily have to give it to someone right now.
Sometimes, patience is key. I can’t help but feel this is all happening a bit too quickly.
Do you think Man United should make Alejandro Garnacho their new number 7 this early? Let us know.
