Andre Onana is set to reject interest from Saudi Arabia, in order to push through a Man United transfer.
Manchester United Football Club allowed David de Gea’s contract to expire last week, with the Spaniard now mulling over his options before making a decision.
As a result, Erik ten Hag is looking at alternatives for the number one job, with Andre Onana’s name the most linked recently.
The man from Cameroon has only been at Inter Milan for one season, culminating in a Champions League final loss, though he was excellent throughout.
Now, 90min.com have provided an update on Onana’s future. They say, in their headline, that the 27-year-old is ‘hopeful’ of a Man United transfer this summer. He’s ready to reject interest from Saudi Arabia in order to try and push through an Old Trafford transfer.
According to the report, Onana has been identified as United’s ‘top goalkeeping target’, with the man from Cameroon described as the ‘ideal’ Ten Hag player for the number one position.
Whether United can get a deal over the line, given financial constraints, remain to be seen. United still have many holes to fill this summer, while signing someone like Onana would take a large chunk out of that budget. A top striker is also a need.
Ten Hag has worked with Onana before at Ajax, meaning the transition should be somewhat seamless for the goalkeeper should he make the move. However, I wouldn’t rule out United either moving for a cheaper keeper, or even bringing De Gea back at this stage.
There’s no doubt that Onana is the ideal signing, though sometimes, everything doesn’t work out exactly as you’d planned. Right now, I’d give the club a 50/50 chance at signing Onana.
