Man United have begun talks over the potential signing of Andre Onana.
David de Gea is currently a free agent, after his Manchester United deal expired at the end of June. Right now, the Spaniard appears to be weighing up his options, though an Old Trafford stay remains a possibility, albeit an unlikely outcome.
Erik ten Hag, rightly, is beginning to explore his options. Among those is a player he’ll be extremely familiar with; Andre Onana.
The man from Cameroon enjoyed a stunning debut season for Serie A side Inter Milan, culminating in a Champions League final defeat to Manchester City.
Yesterday evening, the usually reliable David McDonnell in The Mirror provided us all with an update on a possible Reds move for Onana.
According to the report, United have opened talks with Inter Milan over a proposed move for the man who is rated at around £50m.
Ten Hag views Onana as the ‘ideal replacement’ for the outbound star De Gea. Preliminary discussions have taken place behind the scenes over the man from Cameroon, with a formal bid set to be launched in the ‘coming days’.
Although that bid is yet to be made, it’s believed there’s a gap in valuation. As mentioned earlier, Inter want £50m for Onana, whereas United believe his market value is closer to the £40m mark.
Despite that disparity, there is a belief that the clubs can come to some sort of agreement, with Onana a genuine option to become the Reds’ new number one.
It’s stated that Ten Hag wants a keeper who is comfortable with the ball at feet, similar to how both Ederson and Alisson can play out from the back, transforming their respective clubs as a result.
If this is what Ten Hag wants and needs, then go get him his man. Yes, it would be expensive, but if it can positively change the style of United’s play, then it’d be worth every penny.
