Three Man United players have been named as the likely candidates to be sold by Erik ten Hag this summer, in order to raise some extra funds.
Manchester United Football Club have made just one signing this summer; Mason Mount. Although I wouldn’t refer to the Reds’ transfer budget as ‘shoestring’, it’s certainly at a reduced level due to club ownership being up in the air, coupled with FFP rules.
A new goalkeeper and striker simply have to be signed this summer. No ifs, buts, or maybes. Erik ten Hag needs both these players in order to continue to move this squad in a positive direction. The reported £100-120m budget will not cover the cost of high level footballers in both. Hence, players must be sold to offset the costs.
The Guardian have named a United trio as the ‘prime candidates’ to be sold this summer, in order to raise those extra funds. Harry Maguire, Fred and Anthony Elanga are the guys whose heads are on the chopping block.
After spending £55m on Mount, United have, at max, £65m to play with. Andre Onana will likely cost around the £50m mark, leaving £15m left to sign a striker. That’s nowhere near enough.
If Rasmus Hojlund is the guy the Reds want to sign, for a fee worth around £60m, around £45m will have to be raised via player sales.
Will these three be able to generate that sort of cash? I’d be surprised, particularly as United have been pretty horrible as a selling club for about a decade.
It’s largely down to overpaying players in terms of weekly wage. These guys rightly, do not want to take a pay cut to move elsewhere, making them tough to sell.
I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised to see all three of these players still at the club beyond this summer window.
