Man United kicked off their pre-season in positive fashion, beating Leeds United 2-0. But what did we learn from the encounter?
Erik ten Hag will be pleased with the end result, though it was the process that’s the all-important thing for Manchester United here. This was a job well done for the Red Devils, who kick off pre-season in the perfect manner.
These matches often showcase what could possibly be ahead for the Old Trafford side, so let’s get right into what we figured out from this game.
Kobbie Mainoo is going to be a star
From minute one, the young midfielder looked more than comfortable in the United senior side. His passing, energy, composure and sheer skill was on full display.
It’s easy to see why he’s regarded as the next big thing to come out of the United academy, aged just eighteen. I genuinely do believe he’ll be in and around the first-team fold this season. There will be no loan for this young man.
Mason Mount already looks right at home
He only played a half, though his impact was obvious. The gaffer was after some extra legs in midfield and Mount was everywhere – on both sides of the ball.
The Englishman looked super comfortable with the ball at feet, while trying to get forward wherever possible. What impressed me most was his work-rate and tenacity. He covered every blade of grass to get United back in possession.
Lisandro Martinez hasn’t missed a beat
It felt like the Argentine had never been away. He slotted right back in there next to his mate, Raphael Varane, without really looking troubled against a lively Leeds United attack.
‘The Butcher’ was dearly missed when he picked up that injury, but the fact that he’s going to have a full pre-season is massive for our chances going into the 2023/24 campaign. We’re very lucky to have him.
The future looks bright
Honestly, I could write individual posts about a lot of the lads that played in the second 45, but let’s just group them all together and shower them with praise.
From Noam Emeran, to Isak Hansen-Aaoren, with a little Joe Hugill sprinkled in, they all looked so sharp against a senior Leeds United line-up. It’s what I love about these pre-season games. You get a genuine glimpse into what’s to come – and I have to say I’m delighted.
Beating Leeds will never get old
I’ll genuinely miss Leeds being a Premier League side. They’re a fierce rival and matches against them are always exciting. Plus, this fixture has guaranteed goals over recent seasons!
Albeit just a pre-season friendly, it was fun watching the Red Devils get one over on their Yorkshire rivals once again. The joy was heightened by the aforementioned young lads really shining.
