Manchester United beat newly relegated Leeds United in the first game of the pre-season this evening. Erik ten Hag used the occasion to play two different teams, ensuring that as many of the squad as possible got minutes on the pitch.
Raphael Varane started in the first half as captain, with both clubs celebrating a former player of both clubs, Gordon McQueen, who recently passed away.
It was really an honour for me to be captain of that game. I know he was a legend of both clubs and to represent the club, whilst captain, for that occasion was an honour. I think there’s a big memory for both clubs and a big respect from the fans too.
A more experienced team made way for a much less experienced team in the second half, with Noam Emeran opening the scorer, before claiming a brilliant assist for the second goal scored by Joe Hugill.
I think there are no friendly games, we always want to win, the youngsters got the job done. So congrats to them. We keep working hard to be ready for the start of the season.
