Man United are now close to sealing the signature of Andre Onana.
Manchester United allowed David de Gea to leave a couple of weeks ago. Since then, all the talk has been about who the Red Devils could bring in as a replacement.
Dean Henderson was mentioned as a possible option upon his return from a Nottingham Forest loan move. However, the strongest stories have been claiming that Andre Onana is the man Erik ten Hag truly wants.
The Dutch boss worked with the Cameroonian during his time at Ajax, winning many trophies together as part of that excellent Eredivisie team.
Well, it seems as though United are closing in on their man. According to Fabrizio Romano, a United move to sign the 27-year-old is ‘imminent’. Apparently, the Reds are ‘now closing in’ on a deal, as a verbal proposal has been made during talks today.
That deal is said to be worth around £47m all-in, which is very reasonable for a player of Onana’s calibre.
You have to give credit to the club. United have identified two targets in the form of Mason Mount and Onana. It looks like both have been delivered to the gaffer – and at an early stage in the transfer window, too.
Onana will completely transform the way United play the game. I fully expect the Reds to enjoy way more possession this coming season, because they’ve got a keeper who will actually find Reds teammates with the ball at his feet.
While it’s true that Onana isn’t as accomplished as De Gea in the shot-stopping department, the overall control of his penalty area, coupled with the aforementioned passing ability, should more than make up that gap.
I’m seriously excited to watch this guy play for United. He’s truly something special.
