Man United are trying to sign Zion Suzuki, as their new backup goalkeeper.
It’s clear that Andre Onana is the first choice option to take up the number one slot at Manchester United from next season. However, with Dean Henderson looking set to leave alongside David de Gea, the club need to bring in a second goalkeeper.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Tom Heaton, though you tend to require three shot-stoppers for the course of a long season, if only to protect against injury.
It seems as though Erik ten Hag has identified the man he wants to bring in; Zion Suzuki.
United were linked with the Urawa Reds keeper a week or so ago, though the club have been busy ensuring that the Andre Onana deal goes through first.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has an update for us. According to the Italian, United are ‘working on’ a deal to sign the 20-year-old goalkeeper. Suzuki is one of three options in the position that United are looking at.
Talks with United and the player’s side are now taking place, with no conversations being had with the Japanese club at this point.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Suzuki is the next best thing. Far from it, in fact. Transitioning from the Japanese league to the Premier League is not going to be easy, particularly for such a young player.
The important thing with backup keepers is stylistic fit. If Suzuki is good with the ball at feet, in control of his penalty area and a semi-decent shot-stopper, he’ll do a good job under Ten Hag.
First and foremost, it’s about pushing through the Onana deal, then working on a move to bring in his understudy.
