Man United are now closing in on Andre Onana.
Another day, another Andre Onana update. Manchester United have been in the search for a new number one for a few weeks now, with the man from Cameroon identified as the player that Erik ten Hag desires.
The pair worked together at Ajax. We’ve already seen how Ten Hag likes to surround himself with familiarity. Just look at the deals for Lisandro Martinez, Antony and to an extent, Tyrell Malacia.
Onana is next in line in that regard. It’s Gazzetta dello Sport (Saturday print edition), via Sport Witness, providing the translation. They say that Onana will travel to Manchester either today or tomorrow, after being ‘reassured’ by Ten Hag that this is a good career move for the player.
Ten Hag phoned Onana, in order to help push the deal through. The transfer itself for the 27-year-old is ‘practically concluded’, with just a couple of million difference between the two sides in terms of valuation.
At some point over the next couple of days, United will go to the £45m (€52m) that Inter have been asking for, and he will be signed by the Red Devils.
Onana has already reached an agreement on personal terms with the Old Trafford club, which will see his wages ‘more than double’. He returned to Milan yesterday, but only to empty his locker and presumably say his goodbyes.
Honestly, this is an exciting move. United need a world-class number one who is comfortable with the ball at feet. Just look at how Ederson and Alisson have transformed both City and Liverpool respectively. We’re looking for a similar output from Onana – and it looks like Ten Hag is going to land his man sooner rather than later.
