Manchester City secured their second victory of pre-season with James McAtee and Aymeric Laporte on target in their 2-1 victory over Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in Tokyo.
Pep Guardiola’s side took a first-half lead through McAtee after Julian Alvarez’s effort had deflected into the youngster’s path, with Rico Lewis having been key in the build-up.
Substitute Mathys Tel drew Bayern level in the 83rd minute, tapping into the net after Ederson had denied Leon Goretzka.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were only briefly back on level terms with Laporte firing City back into the lead from the six yard box, following a pass from Phil Foden.
Mail Sport’s Jack Gaughan was in Tokyo to assess the City’s players in the high-profile pre-season clash.

Pep Guardiola’s Treble winners have begun their pre-season campaign with successive wins
MANCHESTER CITY
EDERSON 6.5 – Completed a couple of decent saves when Bayern broke and distribution was strong on the whole.
KYLE WALKER 7 – Must have felt somewhat awkward given Bayern’s interest in signing him but acquitted himself well.
JOHN STONES 7.5 – It’s obvious he enjoys the unusual role and continues to stamp his mark on matches with ease.
RUBEN DIAS 7 – Looks really up for doing this all over again. Tough ask marshalling the back line alone and relishes the challenge.
NATHAN AKE 6.5 – Big block from a Jamal Musiala shot; later took what seemed a bang on the ankle and replaced.
RICO LEWIS 8 – Looks at home wherever he plays. Still learning and will make mistakes but offers lots in midfield or full back.
Rico Lewis will offer Guardiola’s options at full back and midfield during the upcoming season
MATEO KOVACIC 7 – Moved through the thirds with purpose while happy to slow play down. Looks like a Pep Guardiola midfielder.
BERNARDO SILVA 6.5 – Tidy when he hugged the right-hand touchline and links play nicely when moving inside.
JAMES MCATEE 7 – Couldn’t miss with his tap-in but the positive work was making sure he was in there to score in the first place.
JACK GREALISH 7 – Doesn’t seem like he’s been away. Menacing from the left and looks fairly sharp for a first week back.
JULIAN ALVAREZ 6.5 – Couldn’t penetrate the Bayern back line, although was handy when dropping off the front to help with the build-up.
Jack Grealish proved a menacing presence for Man City from the left flank against Bayern
SUBSTITUTES
MANUEL AKANJI (for Ake, 29) – 6 – On at left back earlier than envisaged and had Sane to deal with immediately. Later moved central.
AYMERIC LAPORTE (for Dias, 46) – 7 – A few threatening balls through midfield, good composure at the back and got himself a goal.
RODRI (for Stones, 46) – 6.5 – Almost among the goals again and was captain for the second half – maybe an indication on a future leadership role.
JOAO CANCELO (for Walker, 46) – 6.5 – Playing positively despite the awkwardness of his exit. Maybe looking to impress those elsewhere.
KALVIN PHILLIPS (for Kovacic, 46) – 6 – Robust in the challenge and is demanding the ball in tight areas more often than previously.
Joao Cancelo played positively despite the awkwardness of his January loan departure
Phil Foden will be a major asset through the centre when linking up with Erling Haaland
PHIL FODEN (for McAtee, 46) – 7 – Glides when central and is going to be such a huge asset in there up with Erling Haaland.
SERGIO GOMEZ (for Grealish, 46) – 6 – Buoyed by an encouraging Under-21 Euros, Gomez offered glimpses of quality on the left wing.
ERLING HAALAND (for Alvarez, 46) – 6.5 – Yet to start and similar to last season, City are methodically working on his fitness. Fashioned one decent chance.
OSCAR BOBB (for Lewis, 46) – 6.5 – A real danger out on the right. Could have run at his man more often to cause panic on that side.
MAXIMO PERRONE (for Silva, 71) – 6.5 – Lovely pass for Foden in the build-up to Laporte’s late winner.
BAYERN MUNICH (first half): Sommer 5; Mazraoui 6, Pavard 6, Upamecano 6, Davies 7; Kimmich 6.5, Laimer 6, Musiala 7.5; Sane 7, Gnabry 7, Coman 6
