Fenerbahce goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, is atop Man United’s wish list for the back-up goalkeeper position.
Manchester United’s need to sign a back-up goalkeeper could have just increased. Tom Heaton has suffered a multi-week injury, leaving the Reds light in that area of the field.
Dean Henderson’s future is now up in the air, with some claims suggesting that the Englishman may be forced into an Old Trafford stay. I cannot imagine that would go down well with his camp.
That said, United are now looking at options in the back-up goalkeeper market. The latest name to be linked with filling that void is Fenerbahce’s Altay Bayindir.
According to the Daily Mail, United are eyeing the 25-year-old goalkeeper, who is viewed as a ‘prime target’ for the Reds. A £5m deal has apparently been discussed in recent weeks.
The man from Turkey would have to understand that he’d be a back-up to Andre Onana from day one. If he’s okay with that, then this is a move that could have some real credibility.
It all depends on finding the player with the right profile. Understudy goalkeepers do not tend to be the best in some areas, though it’s key that the stylistic fit is correct. Bayindir is good with the ball at feet and an adequate shot-stopper. He should have enough ability to do a decent job in the event that Onana is unavailable.
At this stage, it’d be cruel to deny Hendo his move, while the funds he’d generate would cover a move for Bayindir and then some. It absolutely makes sense to move in a different direction at this stage.
The bottom line is whether Bayindir is comfortable with taking a backseat for the most part.
