Man United are among the sides showing a willingness to sign Ivan Toney.
Manchester United’s issues are there for all to see right now. The club are just not operating as you’d expect – both on and off the field.
While it’s true it’s still early on in the season, it’s hard to ignore what’s happening. Further signings are still needed. It’s not looking like any further additions will be made this month.
As a result, it seems as though attention is already turning to the January transfer window, with a move for Ivan Toney once again being mentioned by the media.
This time, it’s the Daily Mail. They name United as one of the clubs with a ‘concrete interest’ in signing the 27-year-old striker. Chelsea and Tottenham are also keen, with a move as early as January being eyed.
Reports indicate that his current club, Brentford, value the player at around £80m, despite the fact he hasn’t been playing recently after breaking betting regulations.
Toney has recently signed a deal to join sports management firm, CAA Stellar, in a ‘clear indication’ of his intention to leave Brentford.
The verdict
There’s no doubt Toney would be an excellent signing. I’m sure United would have looked into this move over the summer if he wasn’t serving an eight-month ban.
I guess it all depends on how Rasmus Hojlund fares when he’s finally fit enough to play. If the Dane is scoring goals for fun, I do not see the club sanctioning big money to bring in Toney, who’d likely be a rotational option more often than not.
There’s also going to be other competition in the signing, so the price of £80m is probably going to be about how much it’d take to prise him away from Brentford.
