Tom Heaton believes Anthony Martial is the best finisher at Man United.
Manchester United Football Club have been without a clinical striker for the better part of twelve months. Cristiano Ronaldo ran off when the going got tough. Anthony Martial spent last season out injured.
The burden fell to Wout Weghorst and Marcus Rashford, though the issue was addressed this summer with the signing of Rasmus Hojlund. He is currently out injured.
When conducting an official Q&A with the club website, Tom Heaton was asked who he thought the best finisher at the club was. He’d name the aforementioned 27-year-old Martial, hailing his ‘composure’ and ‘calmness’.
I don’t think anyone has ever doubted Martial’s natural talent and ability. Sadly, he doesn’t show it often enough.
Check out what Tom Heaton had to say in full here:
“For me it would probably be Anthony Martial: he can bend it, he can whip it, he can go with power, he can lift it over you,” Heaton told United’s website. “He’s got that composure, that sort of calmness in front of goal that makes it difficult for a goalkeeper.
When he first came to the club, Martial was proving he can score goals at the highest level with regularity. He had a stellar debut season under Louis van Gaal, though that initial hype died pretty quickly.
Whether or not he can rediscover that form this season remains to be seen. Forgive me for being a Martial doubter at this point after so many disappointments. I do hope to be proven wrong, as it’d benefit United if he can start proving his worth.
When Hojlund is fit, I fully expect the Dane to be the lead striker, so Martial may well find his chances limited.
