Man United are looking at Marcos Alonso as a possible short-term option at left-back.
Manchester United Football Club are in pretty big trouble at left-back. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are currently out injured. The severity of the former could be a huge issue for Erik ten Hag.
Diogo Dalot was preferred to Alvaro Fernandez in that position over the weekend. The man from Portugal is certainly better on the right-hand side of defence. Hence, the left-back transfer links are starting to flow.
Earlier this morning, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella’s name was mentioned with potentially filling the void. Now, an ex-Chelsea player has been thrown into the mix; Marcos Alonso.
It’s Christian Falk with the story. He states that United have ‘made a request’ to sign the 32-year-old left-back, who currently plies his trade for FC Barcelona. Those negotiations are said to be ‘ongoing’.
Alonso was decent at Chelsea for many years. Nothing more. Nothing less. The defender played 37 times for Barca last season. Whether he’d consider leaving his homeland for Old Trafford remains to be seen.
Alonso has Premier League experience, so from that aspect, you can sort of see why Ten Hag is looking at bringing him in. However, he wouldn’t set the world alight in this system, while he isn’t getting any younger.
The verdict
From his perspective, it’s hard to think of reasons why he’d leave Barca for United. He’s comfortable there, playing for a side that won La Liga last season. Unless United are set to offer him huge wages, I honestly struggle to see how this move happens.
In all likelihood, United would be hoping for a loan deal, perhaps until the January transfer window. Again, this makes no sense from Alonso’s viewpoint.
